Fusion Garage Grid 10 Tablet

he Grid 10 has powered with 1.2GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core processor, running Grid OS with Android apps, 512MB RAM, 16GB built-in storage and microSD card slot.

The Fusion Garage Grid 10 display of 10.1-inch 4-point touch screen with 1366 x 768 pixels resolution, Accelerometer sensor for auto-rotate, 3-axis gyroscope sensor, Ambient light sensor, 1.3-mega pixels front camera, dimension 274.2 x 173.5 x 13.9 mm and weight 690 grams.
The Grid 10 Tablet has optional 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR, GPS with A-GPS, HDMI port, USB port, microphone, 3.5mm stereo headphone jack, 0.5W two speakers and 5800mAh battery.
The Fusion Garage Grid 10 will be available from 15 September 2011 with two model options;

A startup which called itself TabCo has been teasing the world about its upcoming tablet in recent weeks while remaining stealthy and mysterious. (Among its PR tactics:

Delivering pizza to journalists such as me.) Today, the company came out of hiding–and it turns out that it’s not a new startup at all. It’s an old startup named Fusion Garage, known until now as the company which worked with Michael Arrington of TechCrunch on his CrunchPad tablet idea before cutting Arrington out of the project and releasing a spectacularly disappointing, unsuccessful device called the JooJoo. The TabCo ruse was intended to drum up interest in the company’s post-JooJoo products, a tablet called the Grid-10 and a phone named the Grid-4. I met with Fusion Garage founder Chandra Rathakrishnan today to get demos of both gadgets.

  • Wi-Fi model price is $499
  • 3G and Wi-Fi model price is $599

You can’t accuse Fusion Garage of lacking ambition or shipping me-too products. The Grid devices are built on Google’s Android 2.3 kernel, but Fusion has put together its own user interface and apps, none of which have much of anything in common with the ones on Honeycomb tablets. The desktop (seen above) is a scrolling plane of tiles which you can shuffle around and merge into groups. (It’s very fancy-looking, but it’s not immediately apparent how it’s better than more run-of-the-mill approaches.) The browser hides its entire interface until you need it, and when you pull controls up they’re nothing like the ones on Google’s Android browser. Some menus are circular rather than rectangular. The search engine, deeply integrated into the operating system is…Microsoft’s Bing.

In many places, the Grid operating system feels a little like it’s departing from Android primarily for the purpose of departing from Android. The equivalent to Android’s notification panel slides in from the left, not from the top. When you flip the tablet from one orientation to the other, the image on the display does a 3D swivel as if it’s spinning around to reveal its back, not the 2D rotating effect shared by every other tablet on the market. Not better, not worse–just different.

What I saw of Grid was, um, on the ugly side: colors and design elements didn’t seem very consistent from screen to screen, and there were places where text butted up against edges with little or no margin. It’s far, far less aesthetically pleasing than iOS, Android Honeycomb, RIM’s QNX as seen on the BlackBerry PlayBook, and WebOS. Building a mobile operating system that’s polished and easy on the eyeballs is proving to be tough even for huge companies; it appears to be harder still for a small outfit such as Fusion Garage.

There is some stuff in the Grid software that has potential. When you tap a word in the Web browser, you get a context-sensitive menu that attempts to give you relevant options for the word in question. (Rathakrishnan’s demo involved highlighting the word “Inception,” then pulling up a menu that let him watch a video of the movie.) The Grid e-mail client–which, again, looks nothing like the stock Android one–integrates Twitter and Facebook. The OS is designed to remember what you’re doing and let you pick up where you left off on any Grid device–for instance, you can stop watching a video on a Grid tablet, then continue watching it on the phone. (Of course, this feature will only interest people who are so impressed by this software that they buy a Grid tablet and a Grid phone.)
So are these an Android tablet and phone, or not? I got mixed messages from Rathakrishnan. On one hand, he started his presentation by knocking Android for being uninspired, and repeatedly said that Grid isn’t Android. He also told me that the Grid gadgets won’t ship with the Android Market. (Fusion Garage plans to start a Grid application store of its own and work with third-party developers to help them design apps for the platform.) But Rathakrishnan also told me that the Grid devices will include Amazon’s Android AppStore, and that they’ll run standard Android apps, including ones designed for Honeycomb. My take: It’s a dramatically reworked version of Android–even more so than the one on Barnes & Noble’s Nookcolor–but Android nonetheless.

Price and timing

While JooJoo owners out there are actually going to get the Grid 10 for free (yes, free!), new buyers will be able to pick up the WiFi version for $499 and the WiFi / 3G model for $599. Both will be available for pre-order today and will be shipping on September 15th. We’ve been promised a chance to see the Grid 10 in person later this week, so stay tuned for impressions.

The Grid-10 runs on Nvidia’s Tegra 2 platform and has what Rathakrishnan says is the highest-resolution tablet screen on the market: a 10.1″ model with 1366 by 766 pixels. It has a camera on its front but not on the back, and supposedly runs for 7 to 8 hours on a battery charge (which would be a major upgrade fromt the JooJoo’s apparent alarming real-world life of 2.5 hours). The industrial design is decent enough, with a pleasantly curved back: it weighs 1.5 pounds (like the original iPad) and is .55″ thick (slightly chunkier than the original iPad).

The tablet is available for pre-order from Amazon now and is supposed to ship in a month in two versions: Wi-Fi-only for $499 and Wi-Fi and unlocked 3G for $599. Oh, and Fusion Garage says that people who bought the JooJoo during its brief time on the market will get Grid-10s for free. (The Grid-4 phone is due in the fourth quarter, in a $399 unlocked version.)

I hope that the Grid-10 that shows up in September is much, much, much more polished than the one I saw today. I asked Rathakrishnan if I could try it for myself. He turned it over to me. And…almost everything I tried to do in the few minutes I had was extremely sluggish, and ended with an operating-system error. So I turned the tablet back over to him without feeling like I’d really used it.

I can’t give a final verdict on a pre-release product, of course. But given Fusion Garage’s extremely idiosyncratic history to date–not to mention the fact that it’s a tiny company with an erratic history competing against giants–it’s clear that the Grid platform and products built on it are going to have to be mighty impressive if Fusion Garage’s second tablet is going to have a longer, happier life than the JooJoo did. Like every other tablet, it needs to be a coherent answer to the question “Why should somebody buy this instead of an iPad?

HP Pavilion dv6-6153cl Specification

HP Pavilion dv6-6153cl Prices

General:
The HP Pavilion dv6-6153cl ($999.99 list at Costco) offers a nice blend of power and style in a desktop replacement laptop. Its Sandy Bridge Core i7 processor and generous helping of RAM deliver solid productivity and multimedia performance, and its switchable graphics engine provides enough 3D horsepower to satisfy all but the most demanding gamers. A Blu-ray drive would be nice, as would another hour or two of battery life, but you do get a big, speedy hard drive, Intel's Wireless Display 2.0 (WiDi 2.0) technology, and a two-year warranty.

Design
As with the HP Pavilion dv6-6113cl ($699.99 list, 3.5 stars), and most of the Pavilion line, the dv6-6153cl features an aluminum lid with smooth, rounded edges and a backlit HP logo. This model is done up in a Steel Gray finish that not only looks cool but is cool to the touch. At 5.7 pounds the laptop outweighs the 5.5-pound Lenovo IdeaPad V570-1066A9U ($629.99 list, 4 stars) and the 5.2-pound Samsung RV520-W01, but its weight is still manageable for short hauls.

The keyboard deck sports the same sleek finish as the lid and holds a comfortable full-size island-style keyboard with a dedicated number pad off to the right. The multitouch touchpad and dual mouse buttons sit inside a backlit border and are a pleasure to use, providing smooth cursor control and responsive mouse clicks. There's a fingerprint reader on the lower-right side of the deck and a power switch and Web browser hotkey on the upper left. This is a Beats Audio–equipped laptop, using four speakers (two in a speaker bar below the screen and two in the base) and software to deliver a much better audio experience than you normally get from a laptop; but a subwoofer, like the one embedded in the dv7-6123cl ($999.99 list, 3 stars), would give it some much-needed bass. The 15.6-inch screen has a resolution of 1,366 by 768 and does a good job of displaying detailed video at 720p, but if you want full HD (1080p) you'll have to splurge for a more expensive model such as the Dell XPS 15z ($1,534 direct, 4 stars), which has a 1,920-by-1,080 resolution screen.

Features of HP Pavilion
The dv6-6153cl has a nice selection of ports, including two USB 3.0 ports, two headphone jacks, a microphone jack, VGA and HDMI video outputs, an Ethernet jack, and two USB 2.0 ports. This model lacks an eSATA port, however. There's a DVD multi-drive on the right side of the laptop, an SD/MMC card reader slot on the front, and a webcam embedded in the display's upper bezel. Wireless features include 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and WiDi 2.0, the latter of which lets you send images to an HDTV or stream your PCs contents onto a display without having to run cables. (Keep in mind you'll need a Netgear Push2TV receiver connected to whatever device you are sending to for this to work.) The dv6-6153cl doesn't come with WiMAX broadband capabilities, nor does it have a Bluetooth radio.

The 750GB hard drive is spacious and speedy (it runs at 7,200rpm), and comes with Windows 7 Home Premium, Cyberlink YouCam, HP Recovery Manager, HP CoolSense, and HP SimplePass 2011 fingerprint software. It also comes with eBay and Snapfish adware, dozens of games, and a trial version of Norton Internet Security—in other words, bloatware. On the plus side, this model is a Costco exclusive and as such comes with a two-year warranty rather than the typical one-year manufacturer's warranty. Costco members can also take advantage of Costco's Concierge setup and troubleshooting service and generous 90-day return policy.

Price List:

Pros
Uses newest Intel CPU technology. Has switchable graphics. Attractive appearance. Includes two-year warranty.

Cons
Lacks Bluetooth and WiMAX wireless, Blu-ray reader. Loaded with bloatware. So-so battery life.

Bottom Line
The HP Pavilion dv6-6153cl gives you an Intel Core i7 processor and AMD switchable graphics for under $1,000, but you don't get features like WiMAX, Bluetooth, and Blu-ray as part of the bargain.

Performance
With Intel's up-to-date 2GHz Core i7-2630QM processor and 8GB of DDR3 RAM, the dv6-6153cl turned in some impressive scores on our benchmark tests. Its PCMark 7 score of 2,344 was only 35 points behind the dv7-6163us ($899.98 list, 3.5 stars), which uses the same CPU. The dv6-6153cl beat the Core i5–powered HP dv6-6123cl by more than 100 points, but couldn't touch the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Thunderbolt)'s ($2,199 direct, 4 stars), which scored 8,315 running Windows 7 in Boot Camp mode. On our CineBench R11.5 test the dv6-6153cl's score of 4.99 topped those of the Dell XPS 15z (3.03), the HP dv6-6163us (4.94), and the Samsung QX411-W01 (2.56), but not that of the MacBook Pro (5.07).

The dv6-6153cl showed some multimedia prowess as well. It completed our Photoshop CS5 test in 3 minutes 52 seconds, which is identical to the result of the dv6-6163us and a few seconds faster than that of the MacBook Pro (3:58); the Dell XPS 15z was the fastest with a score 3:40.The dv6-6153cl's Handbrake time of 1:36 was dead even with that of the HP dv6-6163us and 23 seconds faster than what we saw on the Samsung QX411-W01 (1:59).

Manual switchable graphics on the dv6-6153cl can help conserve power when GPU use is not warranted. The integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 is used for everyday non-graphics-intensive tasks and the discrete AMD Radeon HD 6770M is used to do the heavy lifting. On our DirectX 10 (DX10) Crysis gaming test the AMD GPU gave us 49.9 frames per second (fps), which is more than adequate for smooth gaming. Its result of 19.6fps on our Lost Planet 2 DX9 test was not quite as impressive when compared with those of the Samsung QX411-W01 (26fps) and XPS 15Z (37fps). But you should enjoy relatively smooth gaming on this laptop as long as you dial down the settings and stick to older, less-demanding titles.

In terms of battery life, the dv6-6153cl's 55Wh battery lasted 5 hours 34 minutes on our MobileMark 2007 test. That pales in comparison to the dv7-6123cl's time of 9 hours 14 minutes and is around an hour shorter than the XPS 15Z's 6:22. Only the MacBook Pro had a shorter battery life (4:40).

The HP Pavilion dv6-6153cl offers a nice balance of components, style, and features for a sub-$1,000 desktop replacement, but it lacks a few necessities that would have put it over the top, such as WiMAX and Bluetooth wireless, a Blu-ray drive, and a high-resolution display. If you require full 1080p and a bit more battery life, CPU power, and graphics prowess, consider the Dell XPS 15z instead.

Gateway NV51B05u Laptop Price & Features

2011 Gateway NV51B05u Laptop

Design:
Port selection is typical for a budget notebook. Three USB ports, a LAN jack, a mic jack, and a 5.1-surround-sound–capable headphone jack are augmented by a VGA connector for hooking up an external monitor and an HDMI port for connecting to a big-screen HDTV. On the inside, the NV51B05u includes a 500GB hard drive, which is fairly impressive given the laptop’s price. You also get an 8x multiformat DVD burner and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity.
Also missing is Bluetooth wireless connectivity and an eSATA port for connecting a high-speed external drive, although those are more forgivable in an under-$500 laptop. Less satisfactory are the tiny monaural speaker, the too-small touch pad, and the mediocre Webcam. Together, these last three trade-offs reflect the tight budget for choosing components Gateway likely faced to hit this price point.
Thanks to a ridged wave pattern on the matte-black lid, the NV51B05u doesn’t look as plain as a super-inexpensive notebook might—although the plastic does feel a bit, well, cheap. The machine’s 5.7-pound weight is reasonable for a machine with a 15.6-inch screen, and while you wouldn’t want to carry it all day, schlepping it from home to office and back again is easy enough.
So what corners have been cut to bring the NV51B05u in at well under $500? In addition to the low-end CPU and only 3GB of RAM (which we’ll get to in the Performance section below), the card reader on the front edge supports just the SD and MultiMediaCard formats, a likely cost-cutting measure. (Most others support up to five formats.)

Performance:
Another benefit, which applies less to this laptop than to more compact Fusion-based models like the HP Pavilion DM1, is that the APU's circuitry generates less heat than a discrete graphics chipset would, so the Fusion platform can make possible very small notebooks (think 11.6- or 12.1-inch screens), while raising performance and keeping the price low. As we found in our testing, that's really the best place for this technology. The competition is more fierce in the budget-price mainstream-laptop (15.6-inch) category where this Gateway notebook fits; competing notebooks deliver about three times the performance at only about twice the price.
Built on AMD’s Fusion platform, the NV51B05u combines a budget-class main chip (the 1.6GHz AMD E-350) with 3GB of RAM to deliver performance that’s good enough for almost all of the chores a typical user does day in and day out. AMD’s Fusion technology puts both the CPU and the graphics-processing circuitry on a single chip, which AMD calls an accelerated processing unit (APU). The purported benefits of this are better graphics performance, longer battery life, and lower prices.
Similarly, the NV51B05u’s multimedia performance is slow compared with more traditional (higher-priced) models. On our Windows Media Encoder trial, in which we encode a standard 3:15 video clip, the Gateway entry required a long 14 minutes and 30 seconds to complete the test task. The Toshiba Satellite C655D was in the same ballpark (13:56), but other mainstream notebooks churn through this job in about 4 minutes. On our iTunes Conversion Test, in which we convert a standard mix of 11 MP3 tracks to AAC format, the NV51B05u took 10:48—much longer than the 3:56 average for the mainstream class and slower than the Toshiba Satellite entry, which completed the test in just under six minutes.
On the 64-bit version of our PCMark Vantage benchmark test, which measures overall system performance, the NV51B05u scored 2,409, and on the 64-bit version of the Cinebench 10 test, which tests all CPU cores, the machine scored 2,236. Those scores are in line with the 2,239 and 2,147 delivered by the $449 Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5043 (another ultra-low-cost mainstream notebook, which we tested with a single-core AMD V-series CPU), but well behind more traditional budget notebooks like the Intel Core i5–based, $749 Acer Aspire 5742G-7200 (which scored 6,111 on PCMark Vantage and 8,583 on Cinebench).
These 3D-acceleration abilities mean that you can enjoy some DirectX 9 games, as long as you don’t mind tweaking the effects settings. For example, on our older test title Company of Heroes, we saw a borderline-acceptable playback rate of 23.6 frames per second (fps) with the resolution set to 1,024x768, anti-aliasing off, and other effects set to a mix of high and medium. That’s playable, and dialing back a few more effects put the frame rate at the 30fps level that gamers shoot for as a minimum. Of course, turning anti-aliasing on, upping the resolution to 1,366x768, and setting effects to high dropped the frame rate into the unplayable zone (15.4fps). But the impressive part is that this under-$500 laptop can be considered for 3D games at all. The best the Satellite C655D-S5043 could muster was 13.9fps.
A performance bright spot of the AMD Fusion platform is its graphics handling. The on-chip graphics, which AMD dubs the Radeon HD 6310, helps the NV51B05u deliver much better 3D-acceleration scores than a machine in this price class should. The NV51B05u scored 2,443 on 3DMark06 at 1,024x768, which measures graphics performance. While this still trails the scores of 7,000 or more we see from mainstream notebooks in the $700 to $800 price range, it’s impressive for an under-$500 laptop and beats the Satellite C655D-S5043’s showing of 1,706 on this test.
This long battery life is due, in large part, to AMD, which has made big strides toward longer battery life with its Fusion platform. The efforts seem to be paying off. This isn’t the first Fusion notebook that has surprised us with its good battery life. (Note that if you're interested in more about the Fusion platform, nearly all the scores here closely reflect what we saw in our review just a week before of the Fusion-based MSI E350IA-E45 motherboard.)
The NV51B05u also delivered pretty impressive battery life for a budget laptop. On our DVD battery-rundown test, in which we set the screen brightness and volume to 50 percent and play a DVD until the battery dies, the NV51B05u’s six-cell power pack lasted for 3 hours and 23 minutes. That’s well ahead of the Toshiba Satellite C655D (2:18) and even the pricier Acer Aspire 5742G-7200 (2:07), not to mention about an hour better than the average for all mainstream notebooks.

Features:
We’re less impressed with the touch pad. It's gesture-enabled, letting you scroll, zoom, and so on using two-finger gestures. That aspect is not a problem, but the 3x2-inch working area is simply far too small. Given the size of the laptop, room was available for a much larger pad.
On the plus side, the keyboard is impressive for a budget machine. The NV51B05u uses a slick "floating-key" design, in which the keytops seem to hover above their recessed bed. This design not only looks better than the Chiclet-style keyboards that seem to be everywhere, but the key travel and solid feel also make for comfortable typing. Just invest in a can of compressed air to periodically blow out the dust and crumbs that are sure to get trapped in the gaps.
While we didn't care much for the touch pad, the laptop's screen was a high point. Like most laptop screens today, the 15.6-inch panel is LED-backlit, which improves brightness and contrast while lowering power consumption. The glossy panel on the NV51B05u is particularly bright, and colors in photo images are beautifully saturated. The 1,366x768 native resolution makes for easily legible text and icons, although some users might prefer a higher-resolution panel in a notebook this size to more easily fit several application windows side by side. Video images exhibited natural color reproduction and almost no discernible motion blur. One nit, though: While the panel’s side-to-side viewing angle is fairly wide in Windows apps, it is considerably narrower when you're watching video, making the NV51B05u a poor fit for watching a movie with a friend.
The keyboard deck is roomy enough for the full-size keyboard, plus a dedicated number pad. Above the number pad, you’ll find dedicated volume/mute keys (other multimedia tasks require a Function-key combination), along with a Social Networks key that lets you launch your FaceBook, YouTube, or Flickr account.
And speaking of multimedia playback, the single speaker in the NV51B05u is a disappointment. It delivers thin, tinny sound that is good enough for Web audio but not much else. For music, movies, or a long Skype session, you’ll want to use headphones. We were also not impressed with the image quality of the 1.3-megapixel Webcam. In bright light, our test subjects appeared overexposed, and under typical nighttime room lighting (with a floor lamp and table lamp illuminating the room), the camera struggled. The image was plagued by poor color accuracy, a lot of digital noise, and an annoying amount of motion blur even with minor movements. It even looked so after updating the CyberLink-sourced Gateway Webcam utility. Clearly, a new driver or a better camera is in order.

Conclusion:
In the software-you-get-to-keep category, Gateway delivers Microsoft Office Starter 2010, an ad-supported version that delivers limited-functionality builds of Word and Excel. (The full version of Office is also preloaded, for those who want to upgrade.) Gateway also includes the Gateway MyBackup solution (for creating recovery discs and backing up important files), CyberLink PowerDVD (for DVD playback), and Nero 9 Essentials (for burning CDs and DVDs).
We’re happy to see that Gateway didn’t skimp on the operating system to help lower the price, opting for the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium, instead of Windows 7 Basic. But you will have to put up with some desktop clutter out of the box, as Gateway included come-ons for eBay, Gateway Games, Netflix, Nook for PC, and others. (If it means Gateway can collect money from those sponsors and pass the savings along to consumers, we won’t complain too much; you can always prune the offending shortcuts.) You also get a 60-day trial for Norton Internet Security.
Gateway backs the machine with a one-year parts-and-labor warranty with 24/7 tech support, which is on a par with what other major laptop makers offer for their budget laptops. So whether you’re looking at the NV51B05u or one of its fraternal twins, keep a few things in mind: You’ll get a great screen, excellent keyboard, and better battery life and 3D performance than you ever thought possible from a $469 laptop. If you spend your day in a Web browser and office apps, you’ll be perfectly happy with the machine’s horsepower and will likely be able to forgive it when it does bog down for the occasional multimedia-heavy chore. Just be prepared to live with mediocre productivity and multimedia performance, as well as a crummy sound system and Webcam.

Gateway NV51B05u Review:
Gateway notes that the NV51B05u model is sold only at Fry’s Electronics, but that similarly configured models with slightly different model names are available from Best Buy and other Gateway resellers. If you don’t have a Fry’s near you, look for similar configurations at Best Buy (the NV51B02u with 2GB of RAM, or the NV51B08u with a lesser AMD Fusion-based processor). You can also find the NV50A10a (in red) and NV50A13u (in black) on the Home Shopping Network. It's a much different animal there, though, at $599 and coming with a quad-core AMD Phenom II N970 CPU and 4GB of RAM.
keyboard with a number pad, and some 3D-graphics abilities. No, it doesn’t perform like a Core i3 (or even a Core 2 Duo) notebook, and as with all budget machines, the company has made some compromises to hit the low price. But for students, grandparents, or anyone in between that needs just the basics, the NV51B05u is worth a look. Let’s face it: Most of us will rarely use all the processing power that today’s typical dual-core laptop can deliver. So with the Gateway NV51B05u, parent company Acer is betting there’s a market for a mainstream notebook with good-enough performance at an eye-poppingly low price. For just $469, you get a bright 15.6-inch screen, a comfortable
